She understood support was something a lot of other families affected by cystic fibrosis did not have. \u00a0This insight gave her the idea to create the non-profit organization <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/clairesplacefoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Claire\u2019s Place Foundation<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/clairesplacefoundation.org\/2018\/03\/meet-mason-and-grayson-extended-hospital-stay-grant-recipients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relieve the financial strain of cystic fibrosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so families can concentrate on caring for their sick child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides documenting the reality of living with cystic fibrosis on her own YouTube channel, Claire has also found success as a popular motivational speaker at TEDx, PTTOW, the BBYO International Convention 2016, CES, top universities and companies (Philips, Klick Health). She has won multiple awards (one of Seventeen Magazine\u2019s \u201c17 Power Teens\u201d of 2016, Fox Teen Choice Awards 2015, Global Genes\u2019 RARE Champion of Hope Award, World of Children Youth Award, the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes and winner of Los Angeles Business Journal\u2019s \u201cSmall Nonprofit of the Year\u201d). She has also been featured in many magazine articles (Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, People, Ladies\u2019 Home Journal) and television programs (The Dr. Oz Show, CNN, ABC News).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26445\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ClaireWineland-e1523308056268-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"Claire Wineland\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" \/>Cystic fibrosis affects 70,000 people worldwide; 30,000 are in the United States. \u00a0Claire admits it is a taxing illness; there is a lot of daily maintenance involved. She has to deal with a hefty medication regimen, 4-5 hours of daily treatments, multiple surgeries, not to mention having spent a quarter of her life hospitalized. Currently Claire is undergoing tests to see if she can qualify for a much needed double lung transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding her hospital stays, Claire does not ever put her life \u2018on hold\u2019 during those times. \u00a0She explains, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think the truth is that life kind of happens everywhere\u2026 you can\u2019t really stop it because you are in a hospital room. You are still going to feel joy. You are still going to feel miserable. You are still going to have bad days. You are going to have good days. You are going to have days when you laugh. You are going to have days when you cry. That\u2019s kind of just being human. And it doesn\u2019t stop because you are sick. And it doesn\u2019t stop because you are in the hospital<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d \u00a0Such wisdom from one who is just turning 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cystic fibrosis may have almost gotten the best of Claire on more than one occasion, but she has made it through another year \u2013 and is determined to make the most of her life while also helping others.
