It is a two-day celebration that commemorates the beginning of the Jewish New Year. The holy Day of Atonement, <em>Yom Kippur<\/em>, follows a week later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A time of personal introspection, Rosh Hashanah translates to \u201chead of the year\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> = head, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> = the, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shanah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> = year) and marks the creation of humanity (Adam and Eve). This anniversary provides the opportunity to reset, make positive life changes and start anew with a clean slate.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27016\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Apples-and-Honey-by-Oded-Gafni-via-CC-BY-SA-4.0-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Apples and Honey for Rosh Hashanah by Oded Gafni via CC BY-SA 4.0\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Apples and Honey for Rosh Hashanah by Oded Gafni via CC BY-SA 4.0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shanah tovah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning have a \u201cgood year,\u201d is the usual Hebrew greeting during Rosh Hashanah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most Jewish holidays, Rosh Hashanah begins after sundown. Families and friends gather around the dinner table and feast with the intention to evoke a \u201csweet\u201d new year. Sharp-tasting, vinegar-based foods are not consumed since the goal is to avoid a \u201cbitter\u201d year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is customary to eat apples sliced and dipped in honey. A carrot stew called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzimmes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prepared with honey, sometimes also with dried fruits such as raisins or prunes and root vegetables like yam. Pomegranates are also eaten, in hopes that one\u2019s accomplishments be as numerous as its seeds. Instead, newly in-season fruits are served to emphasize the fresh start of the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Challah<\/em>\u00a0is a bread eaten on both nights with honey. Usually baked in an oblong shape, for Rosh Hashanah the loaves are round, to symbolize the circle of life.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attending services for Rosh Hashanah at a synagogue is tradition. Some may go to synagogue every day leading up to Rosh Hashanah and continue to go throughout til Yom Kippur. Others will attend evening services on the first night, and maybe again the following morning. Made from a hollowed-out ram\u2019s horn, there are four sets of notes played on the shofar; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tekiah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a long blast); <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shevarim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (three short blasts);<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teruah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (nine staccato blasts) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tekiah gedolah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a very long blast). The mournful, sobering sounds are a reminder to inwardly contemplate and take responsibility for past transgressions and misdeeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tashlich<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means \u201cthe washing away of sins\u201d, is another ritual that can be observed. It entails visiting a body of moving water (river, ocean) and tossing into it pieces of bread. The intent is that these actions help to cleanse oneself and wash away the mistakes of the previous year. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are differences as to how Rosh Hashanah is celebrated around the globe. Like any major holiday, there are cultural aspects, degrees of religious devotion and even individual family traditions that come into play. But for the most part, the overall theme is to reflect on the prior year and have hopeful, positive aspirations for the new year to come.
