It follows a time of personal introspection and reflection that begins ten days earlier with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/2018\/rosh-hashanah-a-time-of-reflection-and-celebration\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosh Hashanah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Jewish New Year. People call the ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur the \u201cten days of repentance\u201d or \u201cthe days of awe.\u201d Called the Day of Atonement, the focus is on repentance and forgiveness. It is when God weighs one\u2019s previous year\u2019s good deeds against their transgressions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This holiest of days is recognized as the day Moses asked God to forgive the Jewish people for the sin of making and worshiping the Golden Calf idol (after God gave Moses the Ten Commandments). This theme appears throughout the holiday. It is the opportunity to ask for God\u2019s forgiveness before God inscribes names into and seals The Book of Life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding Yom Kippur<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27114\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/White-Dove-by-awmleer-via-Unsplash-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"White Dove for Yom Kippur by awmleer via Unsplash\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">White Dove by awmleer via Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur is a more solemn holiday, not celebratory and jovial. Therefore, \u201cHappy Yom Kippur\u201d is not an appropriate greeting to anyone observing the holiday. Instead, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G\u2019mar Hatima Tova<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (May you be sealed in the Book of Life), or the shorter version \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G\u2019mar Tov\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is said. Before Yom Kippur begins, it is customary to say \u201cHave an easy fast.\u201d Those not fasting, but observing, can be greeted with \u201cHave a good holy day\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGood Yuntif<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in Yiddish or \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yom Tov<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in Hebrew).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day before, often entails a hearty meal to prepare one\u2019s physical strength for the upcoming fast. It is also tradition on the day before to ask forgiveness from anyone who may have been wronged (as it is believed that God cannot forgive sins done to other people). Charitable donations, cemetery visits, candle lighting, and special prayers\/ blessings are some other customary pre-Yom Kippur rituals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Yom Kippur begins the following day at sundown, it continues for approximately 25 hours. On this Day of Atonement, one observes by fasting (no food or drink, including water), taking a day of rest from work (including the use of technology), repenting for any misdeeds and praying for atonement. Some may continue to go to synagogue, as they did during Rosh Hashanah.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Yom Kippur Traditions.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yom Kippur also includes abstaining from bathing, the application of skin lotions, creams or oils, the wearing of leather footwear and engaging in sexual relations. The idea is that one should have no physical needs on this day and that one should concentrate only on spiritual well-being. Another one of the traditions is to wear white clothing to symbolize the focus on purity and spirituality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the sun has set the next day, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shofar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the ancient trumpet-like instrument made from a ram\u2019s horn) is blown in synagogues. This announces the end of the Yom Kippur fast and that it is now time to celebrate that God has forgiven everyone\u2019s sins. Meals that break the fast may include<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/recipes\/dave-lieberman\/noodle-kugel-recipe-1946564\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kugel<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pudding made from egg noodles or potato. Other<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/10\/04\/1126212709\/suggestions-for-dishes-to-break-the-yom-kippur-fast#:~:text=Russ%20%26%20Daughters%20Cafe-,Bagels%2C%20quiche%2C%20fish%20platters%2C%20honey%20cake%20and%20sweet%20kugel,completing%20their%20Yom%20Kippur%20fast.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customary fare for breaking the fast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes: bagels, honey cake, and quiches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This special day encourages one to spend time on personal growth. It establishes that it is important to ask for forgiveness. And likewise, be willing to forgive in return (which fortifies personal relationships). There is a strength in resolving to never again repeat the same mistakes. And taking a break from indulgences may be hard or inconvenient, but also demonstrates a humble self-denial.
