Whether or not you are working from home yourself, you still need to figure out how to keep your kids busy and challenged \u2013 without the options of trips to parks, libraries, theaters, museums and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public gathering spaces<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are some tips on how to keep your kids&#8217; minds moving and motivated throughout however long this takes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a schedule.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is well-known that kids thrive on a routine. Get your kids involved with the planning of their daily schedule. Maintain regular meal and sleep times. If they have set online school course hours, plan other activities around them. Include a couple of free-time breaks, maybe mid-morning and then another later in the afternoon. Also assign at least one daily chore. Write up or print out their schedule and hang it up for them to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teach.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28288\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28288\" style=\"width: 251px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Kai-Mateo-Quintero_M-Quintero_20200410-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"Keep Kids' Minds Moving\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keeping up with school work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning at home can be enjoyable as well as productive. Of course, there are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the standard subjects of reading and writing, mathematics, social studies, science, etc. However, you now have the chance to introduce your kids to subjects may not be offered anymore, such as art and music. Even if your children have online classes or are not of school age yet, you can still schedule special education time on a subject of your choice. Many educational companies are currently offering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidsactivitiesblog.com\/135609\/list-of-education-companies-offering-free-subscriptions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free subscriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit technology.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try not to let your kids sit in front of the television for hours on end. Perhaps let them choose a couple of programs each. Put time limits on recreational computer and\/or tablet\/ iPad usage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of video games, get out your board games, puzzles, play <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/2017\/fun-stuff-to-do-indoors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indoor games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or build a fort. An alternative to using the cell phone, have your kids hand write letters or create homemade greeting cards to send to friends and family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be crafty.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep kids occupied with creative projects. No need to spend a lot of money; use items from around your house. Set them up with a bunch of old magazines, settle on a theme and have them cut out corresponding pictures. Have them arrange the cut-outs on a sheet of paper, give them a glue stick \u2013 instant collage. Paint and write positive\/ kind thoughts on rocks from your yard (which can be left around your neighborhood for others to discover). Make a batch of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mortonsalt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dough_It_Yourself_Handbook.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">salt dough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for hours of countless fun. Final pieces can be baked and decorated. Running out of coloring books? Print<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crayola.com\/featured\/free-coloring-pages\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free coloring pages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get cooking.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28290\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200409_Kai-cooking-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cooking fun.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your kids help with the preparation of your meals. Keep to simple recipes for sandwiches, soups, pasta (spaghetti, macaroni and cheese) and casseroles. Even toddlers can participate by adding already measured ingredients into a bowl and giving a stir or two. Of course baking cookies, cupcakes and other sweets can be its own afternoon activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take up hobbies.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do any of your kids have a special interest? Expressed the desire to learn how to play a musical instrument? Anyone ever talked about learning to knit and\/or crochet? Wanted to start a stamp or coin collection? Maybe one of your kids is a budding writer or filmmaker. Encourage them to document their experiences of these unprecedented times. Future generations will appreciate the first hand observations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage reading.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28289\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200410_SQ-JCQ-Kai_square-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Keep Kids' Minds Moving\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Family reading time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With libraries closed, it may be difficult to entice kids to read what books they already have. If this is the case, you can check out<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/b\/ref=gbpp_itr_m-3_01bf_Children?node=4&amp;ie=UTF8\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for affordable used books and e-books. Of course there are books which stand the test of time and are more easily up for re-read (Harry Potter). Another option are audio books (especially for kids who are not reading on their own yet). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.storylineonline.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storyline Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a children&#8217;s literacy resource featuring the world&#8217;s best storytellers reading books aloud and includes at-home activity guides with lessons for K-5 students. For additional educational learning, require kids to write book reports on what they listened to or read. Have a discussion about the book\u2019s theme with younger children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean-up and organize.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s never too early to encourage kids to keep their bedrooms clean and tidy. They should make their beds each morning. This is also a great time to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northstarmoving.com\/about\/press\/prep-spring-eight-tips-clear-clutter-find-space-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de-clutter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Have your kids help you go through and pack up any no-longer-used toys or clothing for future donation. Go further and involve them in the reorganization of their closet and\/or chest of drawers. Kids take pride in maintaining \u201ctheir space.\u201d Have a more motivated kid who wants to tackle redecorating their bedroom or just even rearranging the furniture? Let them at it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get fresh air.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your backyard an extension\/ additional room of your home. Kids can spend quiet time outside with a book or writing in a journal. Consider having a family meal on your patio or a picnic on the lawn.\u00a0 Besides playing the usual athletic games, a well-planned scavenger hunt can provide both physical and mental exercise. Start a garden if you do not already have one. If your home does not include private outdoor space, take your kids for a walk or bike ride each day (still keeping six feet apart from others).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask for advice.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be hesitant to ask other parents on how they are coping with keeping their kids\u2019 minds moving. Compare notes; chances are they may have thought of something you have not. Also check out social media for ideas. A few examples include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caviarandcashmere.com\/30-things-to-do-at-home\/\">Caitlyn Chase<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/inhonorofdesign.com\/\">In Honor of Design<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/houseinhabit\/?hl=en\">Jessica Reed Kraus<\/a> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sophie.jaffe\/?hl=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophie Jaffe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You never know from where the good ideas can come.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all, remain positive.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try not to exhibit any fears or anxiety in front of your kids. Children tend to pick up and then mimic their parents\u2019 attitudes. Stay calm and positive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain to your kids that \u201csheltering in place\u201d and \u201cphysical\/ social distancing\u201d are situations over which we do have control. We can help in the fight against the spread of coronavirus. We are also presented with an opportunity to spend quality time together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is hard to be separated from friends and other family members. However, explain that we are six feet apart right now \u2013 so we can all be together when this is all over.
