ABOVE: CDs, DVDs and other media can take up a huge amount of shelf space, and they can be difficult to organize and locate when kept in individual cases. A disk organizing system, such as the HardBody 90 DVD case from Slappa, will save you space and time .
When looking for an entertainment cabinet, Laura cautions homeowners to be sure to measure each piece of equipment that will be housed inside, including cable boxes. "Also, if you happen to build a cabinet or furniture," she says, "make sure you build an area large enough for not only your television, stereo, etc., but enough for you to reach in and set up the cords. If you purchase a new television you don't want to have to take your furniture apart to set it up."
Bedroom
The bedroom, of course, should be a calming place where homeowners can relax. But, as in the living room, many bedrooms contain televisions,
as well as displays of treasured collections and sometimes even computers.
''Although many would find not having a television in the bedroom 'calming,' let's face it, it is something not everyone can live without," says Laura. "For those of us that need to have a television in the bedroom, I suggest keeping it in a stand that can close up." Laura also suggests finding a peaceful screensaver for any plasma television kept in the bedroom.
Finding the time and opportunity to read is an activity that many find restful before bedtime.
"Make sure you have good lighting on both sides of the bed, " Laura says. "That way, whether you have a television or not , it encourages you to read. I have a basket next to my bed with the books I am reading so they are easily accessible.
Also, keeping them in a basket helps organize the bedroom and keeps it looking neater."
Laura also cautions homeowners to make sure they can stow any computers in the bedroom out of sight. The last thing you want to do as you prepare to sleep is think about work!
