Moving . . . Celebrity Style
When your possessions are as valuable as a movie star’s, you don’t want to trust moving to "Two Guys and a Truck." Affluent movers demand personalized service, utmost discretion and the white-glove treatment.
"The details are what make the move," says Laura McHolm, co-founder of NorthStar Moving, a Chatsworth, Calif. mover that has worked with Angelina Jolie and Eva Longoria, among others. "Every move is unique."
Some of the star-studded services NorthStar provides are: staging, either as a selling tool or to help movers settle in once they arrive at their new home; pet care, to pamper the pooch during packing and moving; child care, to keep kids safe, happy and entertained; and professional organizing to keep things in their place on both ends of the move.
But the folks at NorthStar really go all out for their celebrity clients. "When we work with celebrities, we do decoy moving trucks to throw off the paparazzi," McHolm says. She’s also handled what she calls "celebrity breakup moves," where moves have been stopped midstream so the star’s significant other could see no evidence of the move occurring.
McHolm has handled moves costing from $500 to $250,000. The most expensive private residential move: $150,000.
Some tips for moving celebrity style:
- Check out your mover. Get referrals from people you trust, and call the Better Business Bureau to make sure no complaints have been filed.
- Don’t hire a mover just based on price. "It’s your life’s possessions," says McHolm. "Do you really want to worry about a few dollars here or there?"
- Make sure the mover handles the type of move you’re doing. Do they have experience with art or wine collections, for example?
