Do It Yourself Organization means less stress on moving day for you. Not many people realize but moving and do it yourself organization go hand in hand.  Whether it’s packing for a move, unpacking your belongings, or just organizing your new home after moving day, do it yourself organization can be done anytime! Grab a pen and piece of paper and start taking notes, a smoother moving day depends on it! 

Moving Plan

The first part of do it yourself organization is figuring out just how you want your new home organized! What room would best suit your home office and what room is the perfect bedroom? Does the sofa go on the right or left? Lay out plans as to how you want your new home arrange for do it yourself organization.

Do It Yourself Organization – Packing

An important part of do it yourself organization for moving day  is packing. Remember that sometimes it’s better to move with fewer items! Consider purging and donating belongings that you might not need at your new home to get do it yourself organization on the way.

1. Empty and Sort – Empty your belongings on the floor and sort through them. Sort this pile into four categories: “Keep,” “Give Away,” “Trash/Recycle,” and “Store.”

2. Box and Label – Throw out or donate what you don’t intend on keeping and pack up the things you plan on taking with you. Be sure to label exactly which box is fragile, dishes, books, or anything of that sort. Labeling for do it yourself organization can help out your movers on moving day.

  • Make the “Can’t Live Without” Boxes – Set boxes aside per room that have most important items, the electronics, glass, valued items, etc.  Pack and move these items/boxes yourself.
  • The “Open First” Boxes – Set aside special boxes for each room with items that you will continue to use right up to the move, and for items that you will need right away when you get to your new home.

Another tip for do it yourself organization is saving space.  Use the towels, pillows and t-shirts you’re packing as extra padding around fragile items. You will save room in your boxes and protect items. Not only will you save space, but you will use less packing material, saving money and the environment! Color Coding

Now that you’ve got your rooms set, the next step in do it yourself organization is color coding! It’s more useful than you’d think in do it yourself organization moving!

  1. Use dots and colors like these for do it yourself organization (Photo by: psd)

    Assign a color to each room in the old and new house. This color will correspond to the same room in your new house. You’ll use these colors to know where each box will go in the new house.  Firstly make each room in the new house and the old house a specific color.

  2. Then get a notepad or stickers that are that same color and label the boxes according to what room they belong to.
  3. Once you arrive at your new home place the sticker that corresponds to what room you want that room to be. That way once your movers or your friends helping you move know just where to put each box.

Also if you plan on making the rooms in your old home pretty close to your new home, be sure to take a pictures of what your rooms looked like. Keep the picture with you so as you’re unpacking and unloading put things in their proper place, and make your new home picture perfect!
