It’s moving day and you’ve realized that there is just way too much stuff! What do you do? Think storage! Whether your new home isn’t ready just yet or you find yourself with far more belongings than house space, storage is a great idea.  So follow these tips, grab a pen and a piece of paper and start taking notes! How to do it yourself storage starts now!

Choosing Your Storage Facility

Before you start grabbing your boxes and hauling your furniture in your truck, there’s something vital in do it yourself storage missing. A place to store things! When selecting a storage unit, think green! Choose a storage company that uses green warehouse style facilities that store items in reusable wooden vaults rather than vaults that have constant lights and air conditioning to maintain them.

Packing Up For Storage

The first part of do it yourself storage is packing your boxes. (Preferably recycled boxes!)
-Take an inventory of all the things you are putting in storage.
Take a picture of each item before you pack it, and make a list of what goes in each box.
-Tape a note of what’s in each box to the box itself for easy access.
-Also store the picture in a file with the same name as your storage boxes on your computer. Take for example, “bluejacket.jpg” is in file “Box-04.”

It makes storage access and retrieving items much faster when you do it yourself storage.

Keep your camera close, because we’re not quite done with do it yourself storage. As you finish loading your storage unit, take a picture before you close it up or even as you the each layer fills in so you know exactly where everything is in the storage unit. This way you’ll have a general idea where certain boxes are when you decide to access your items later on. Also use clear boxes  as much as possible.  Accessing storage is much faster when you do it yourself storage and can look in the boxes without having to open them.

Protecting Your Furniture

For furniture get eco-bubble, and moving blankets and tape, and some spare cardboard.
-Wrap the furniture with a moving blanket.
-Use the cardboard and eco-bubble as buffers for edges and furniture legs to prevent scratches.
-If you don’t wrap them, it’s a good idea to make sure that you don’t store any items that’ll affect the color right next to the furniture.
-Turn pieces like your sofa or couch on their sides to utilize the storage space better.

Find out how large the storage space is and whether it fits your furniture properly. Also inquire about climate and possible pest problems to ensure that your belongings will be in tip top shape upon moving them out of storage.

Storage is about your convenience, so be sure to make sure that your do it yourself storage experience is how you want it! Not sure about something in the do it yourself moving process?
