Memorial Day is a day to commemorate all of the men and women who died while in military service. In observance of this day, many people visit cemeteries, memorials, and parades, but it’s not all somber. Memorial Day is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your family. Not only is Memorial Day a three day weekend, it also marks the unofficial beginning of summer.

Memorial day is the last Monday of May, and this year it’s on May 27th. There are plenty of great events to get moving to this Memorial Day, but these are some of my favorites!

Memorial Day Events

On Memorial Day, the Queen Mary Salutes the U.S. Military Personnel by giving free admission to all active and retired military personnel.

While you’re in the patriotic spirit, head to the Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade. See military marching units, classic cars, bands, floats, and more. It’s a great community event for Memorial Day.

Head out to any of the Forest Lawn locations in Los Angeles for their annual Memorial Day festivities with patriotic music, wreath laying, free refreshments, and more.

Memorial Day Weekend Festivals

Make use of  Memoral Day weekend and head out to some of these great festivals. The most important thing is that you’re moving and going out with your family and having fun on Memorial Day weekend!

If you want to spend your family time together on Memorial Day, heading to the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival is perfect. Celebrating all things strawberries, there is a parade, carnival rides, strawberry pageants, and of course, lots of strawberries to eat!

The Cajun Creole Music Festival in Simi Valley is a great destination for Memorial Day with their music, dance lessons, kids area, and lots of demonstrations.

Get moving to downtown Hermosa Beach, and see “The Largest Arts & Crafts Fair in Southern California” at Fiesta Hermosa. With music, food, and an entire art fair, you’ll be sure to have a fun filled Memorial Day at Fiesta Hermosa.

If none of these sound apealing to you, why not just have a good ol’ fashioned BBQ in your backyard for Memorial Day. (I’ve got some great vegetarian BBQ recipes that are sure to be a hit!) Maybe head to your local park or a nearby beach and spend the day there.

Hope everyone has a moving Memorial Day! Spend some time with your family and remember those who served and are serving!
