A Day at the Beach with Claire's Place FoundationHi there, it’s Claire! How are things going for everyone? It’s been awhile since I’ve updated you guys. Did you know that May was Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month? As May fades, I thought it’d be nice to reflect on CF Awareness Month. It’s an interesting time for me and other CFers.

What does Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month mean to you?

AIt’s interesting, because most of my career is about CF Advocacy and spreading the word about how it is to live with it. CF Awareness Month didn’t seem too different—a couple of radio things and a couple of talk things. I think for me CF Awareness Month is for other families who don’t know exactly what they are going through and who need support. For the people who have lived with it, it’s their chance to explain to the world what it is. People who live with Cystic Fibrosis  have to spend half of their life in the hospital, but it’s not something to feel sorry about. I am a firm believer that the more you understand about the world, the more beautiful it can be.

A Time To Reach Out

CF Awareness Month is also a time to reach out to others with Cystic Fibrosis.  CFers will reach out (and a lot did to me on the facebook page) because CF can be a very lonesome disease. They can’t hang out with other CFers without containing their disease. It can be very lonely, so there is something very special about being with someone in person especially someone who has been through what you have. It’s what CF Awareness Month does very well. You can reach out and not feel strange about it.

Claire with PuppiesI’ve always accepted CF, because it’s not something I want to fight. It’s not something to run away from, because it is something that I will always have. Other CFers feel differently. They fight against it. To them it’s fuel to find a cure. Some use CF Awareness Month as a time to accept their illness. Really the importance of Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month is that it’s just acknowledging what we’ve been through CFers.
