Some General Tips:

  • When you’re moving yourself, plan to move before the summer months. During your do it yourself moving day, you’ll be keeping doors opened. You don’t want to waste air conditioning during do it yourself moving day!
  • When you go through your things, don’t just throw stuff out! Think “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” You may be able to donate your unwanted items. Do it yourself moving can also mean do it yourself donating.

Do it yourself moving can be green moving just by changing the packing materials you use. Do it yourself moving becomes green moving in a snap!

Recycled Packing Paper

Use recycled packing paper instead of newspaper. Newspaper is not always the best option for packing your breakables such as dishes. Further, using white paper instead of newspaper will prevent running the dishwasher multiple times in order to get newsprint off dishes!

Biodegradable Packing Bubble

Biodegradable packing bubble is great for do it yourself moving! It’s green! It’s clean! And not only can you let your eco-bubble biodegrade, but you can use it over and over again just like any other packing bubble!

Recycled Boxes

Put down the green and go green. Don’t go out and buy new boxes for your do it yourself moving day. Find recycled boxes in your neighborhood! Check places like your local grocery store, convenience store or any big chain store. Some stores will even have a cardboard bin in the back! If you end up having unusable cardboard, consider getting creative with your cardboard!

Make Your Own Packing Peanuts

Do it yourself moving lets you be creative so instead of buying styrofoam peanuts make your own. Here’s how!

Biodiesel Fuel

This one may not be for do it yourself moving people, but I’m still going to list it. Green moving companies, like NorthStar Moving® run their fleet off of biodiesel fuel. You won’t have a fleet of trucks to worry about, but if your looking to rent a moving truck for your do it yourself moving day, try to get a truck that runs off biodiesel fuel!
