Ron Cohen is the man! I moved from Los Angeles to Brooklyn, NY and it was the easiest move I’ve ever had–and incredibly affordable. The movers are great people and everything arrived on-time and perfectly intact. This company has no hidden fees and the billing is straight forward. I couldn’t recommend them more!
I labored long and hard and researched several different companies before deciding on North Star. Hopefully I can save you from having to do the same by letting you know that these guys are really great.
Booking the move was a snap and they were even able to accomodate a last minute schedule change.
My consultant Jason was very honest and helpful in suggesting ways that I could save money on my move by purchasing some supplies of my own.
On the day of the move the crew of three were friendly and fast. My move had two stops: my new apartment (boyfriend’s place) and storage. They were very gracious in accommodating a last minute decision to move some stuff out of my boyfriends to bring to storage.
The move cost exactly the amount that I had planned on spending and there were no hidden costs or surprises when it came time to pay.
I would definitely recommend North Star to any one in need and will certainly be calling on them when needed in the future!!
Paying for Northstar movers was money WELL spent. Ron Cohen came to my apartment and gave me a “not to exceed” rate based on the number of items I had. The movers showed up on time (actually a little earlier!) and were super professional througout the process. The pricing was exactly what Ron quoted and everything went smoothly the day of the move. I would highly recommend their services!
Another great find, thanks to Yelp!
As I was preparing for my cross country move from Los Angeles to New York, I was stressing out about what moving company to use to haul all the contents of my 1 bedroom apartment. After all, I had heard so many horror stories about how people were quoted one price, and ended up paying like 3 times as much after the move. Then I came across NorthStar Moving on Yelp, and decided to agree to do the consultation after reading all the positive reviews to get myself an estimate.
I informed them from the beginning that although I needed the pick up on March 30th, I wasn’t going to fly to NY until April 5th, and so I couldn’t receive the delivery until after the 5th. They were completely accommodating, and pushed back my delivery window to be between April 6-12. Furthermore, I didn’t have a destination address in NY when my stuff was picked up, but they didn’t make a big deal out of it at all. They just asked that I either email it to them or let the driver know when they call me a day before the delivery what the address is. 2 thumbs up for customer service already.
So it turns out there are 2 ways they can charge you for a long distance move…by weight (which they determine after they already pack your stuff and take it to their facility), or by a flat fee system they have that includes an estimated weight and a service fee. After getting my estimate for the flat fee system, I opted to get charged by weight, because I figured that it would ultimately cost me less. I was right. How did I find this out? I literally weighed every single box/furniture I owned by either putting it on my bathroom scale, or by carrying it on the bathroom scale and deducting my weight from it.
I did this, not because I’m OCD and have too much time on my hands, but because people try to take advantage of me and overcharge me everywhere I go. I have gotten into countless shouting matches with cab drivers who try to long haul me everywhere from LA to NY to Vegas. They must think, “Hmmm, asian girl probably has no sense of directions…after all, have you seen how they drive??” and try to always take the long way and charge me more. So for this move, I wanted to be cautious and be extremely aware of what ballpark figure to expect when they weighed my stuff. Turned out I had nothing to worry about, because the final weight was in the range of what I expected it to be.
On the day of the move, 4 people came, and literally from the minute they walked in the door, they were on top of it. They wasted no time, with each person getting right to work on their respective duties. I never knew furniture could get disassembled, wrapped in blankets, and taped up so fast. After we went over the inventory inside my apartment, they proceeded to load up the moving van. The movers were in and out of my apartment in 90 minutes flat. CRAZY FAST!!
Not only were they super quick when picking up from my apartment in LA, but they were just as great when they delivered the stuff in NY. I ended up putting my stuff in a storage unit, and even the guy working at the storage was like, “Wow, I have to admit, these guys work so fast…they’re good.” I’m sure the guys at the storage facility come across plenty of movers, and for them to be impressed, it goes to show how great the guys at NorthStar Moving were.
Everyone I came across at NorthStar Moving were super friendly, efficient, accommodating, and just overall awesome guys who make you feel comfortable with something as stressful as a move. I would absolutely use them again if I move, and would recommend them to anyone looking to do a long distance move.

I have to agree with everyone who left four stars. Ron came a week before the move and gave us a quote to move from Glendale to Sherman Oaks. He even advised us on how to arrange to move as economical as possible. This quote was several times less than what we paid to move from Santa Barbara to Glendale (that company ripped us and gave me PMSD – Post Movers Stress Disorder).
Four men showed up the following Saturday on time. They worked quickly and hard – my mom has a lot of stuff and it took about three hours just to load the truck. It was a full days job.
They were all very professional and friendly. Ron contacted me several days later to check that everything went ok.
This company made a big difference for my mom, who is 85 and very high strung. I can’t say enough good things about them!
I moved from NoHo to WeHo 2 weeks ago and NorthStar helped me moving.
Jason is my contact person and he arranged my last minute request. Fast and easy. He even called 2 days after my moving and asked about my feedback!
On the moving day, NorthStar sent 5 people, again they rocked out with 5 PEOPLE to move my one-bedroom apartment. Imagine how fast it went. I was so happily shocked. It took them about 30 mins to clear out from my old apartment and about 15 mins to move my stuff in to my new place.
The moving team was led by Benjamin, he and his team(Juan, Martin, Jose and Oscar) are just purely awesome. Very efficient and handled my stuff very carefully.
You guys KICK ASS!!!
Worked with Ron Cohen to get everything set up before the move. On moving day, the guys were on-time and packed everything quickly and efficiently. Everything was fantastic. I’m definitely using them again next time I move.
I used NorthStar for my recent move from LA to Boston and I am very happy and satisfied with their service. The move was well-organized, the estimate was accurate and the delivery was on time with all things intact. NorthStar also kept me informed about the status of the move throughout. I would highly recommend them to anyone considering a move.
This is my first review on Yelp. Last time I moved I used Hollywood Movers, and it was one of the most distasteful experiences ever. They were slow, lazy, and they broke a ton of stuff. Northstar was the polar opposite. They explained the quote very clearly, then there was a follow-up call to go over everything about the move. The company called me that morning to tell me the guys were on their way. When the guys arrived, they were friendly and courteous and they listened. They went over the contract in detail.
Then they started moving and MAN, it was like I was being moved by the Tasmanian Devil, if said devil was super fast but also careful. They wrapped EVERYTHING in plastic and whenever they found a ding or a flaw, they called me over and showed it to me so they could confirm that there was already damage. They even found natural flaws in the wood of my dresser! They also took the bed apart, which I wasn’t expecting. I forced those poor guys to move all my stuff up a flight of stairs and down a labyrinthine hallway and they just freaking did it without a word. They took one extremely well-deserved break and at no time were they ever grouchy or annoyed. They asked me where to put everything and then asked me again when it was all in if it was all where I wanted it. They went over the contract with me AGAIN, and then I paid. It was reasonable. Not more than what I was expecting. And these guys worked their TAILS off. Only a superhero could have gotten it done faster. A few days later, I received a follow-up call from the company to ask how the move went.
I will always use Northstar. I was extremely impressed. For the record, the three Tasmanian devils were Agustin Guido, Jose Guido and Carlos Canizales. Simply awesome!!!
So, let’s review:
Estimator on time: check.
Complete estimate, including actual travel time: check.
Crew arrived on time:check.
Finished on time: check.
Packed everything they were supposed to, and nothing they weren’t: check.
Finished the move within the time quoted: check.
Charged less than the estimate!!! CHECK! WOOT!
All in all, a very good experience. Would definitely recommend them for local moves!
Extremely professional, friendly, and fast. I was moving from a twelve story apartment building in LA to Long Beach (on a Saturday), and we did everything in about 4 hours. The price came out to be less than what was estimated even. Would recommend them for any move.

We had a great experience moving with Northstar this past Friday. They showed up on time, packed everything up quickly (but carefully), and unloaded quickly. They asked where we wanted everything placed in our new house, and even asked if we wanted to change anything around once it was all inside.
The crew completed the job an hour earlier than our estimate as well, which saved some money. I thought that maybe they would slow their pace in order to pad the bill, but this did not happen at all. Very honest and hard-working crew.
Another great experience with NorthStar! I’ve used them three times… and each time better than the last. Setting up a date for the move was painless, and I knew exactly what to expect. The three men who helped with the move were all fantastic–professional, hard-working, and friendly. I can’t believe how fast they were! What I love is how carefully they treat my furniture. I also used the Yelp coupon for $50, and that was a nice bonus.
I can’t imagine moving myself ever again! Thank you, thank you, thank you NorthStar!!!
I was so impressed by Ron Cohen and the rest of the employees I dealt with at NorthStar. They made my move from Southern California to San Antonio so much easier than I could have imagined. I’ve used other moving companies before I found NorthStar. From now on, it is the only company I will use to move. I’ve even recommended it to friends who are planning their moves. Great job!!
I wanted to both commend and recommend NorthStar Moving Co for the outstanding job they did with my move on Mar 5th, 2011. I have made several residence moves in the past, not always with good results but Northstar exceeded my expectation. The positive experience started with the return call from their account rep, Kat, who was very professional and asked all the right questions. The quoted price was very fair and, as it turned out, an incredible deal. The moving team was very professional and focused on making sure that my possessions and property were well protected. They even had to carry furniture and appliances up a double flight of stairs and never hit the walls or banisters. Even when they finished, there was no damage at all. I would highly recommend them for any move contemplated and will use them again in the future.
I loved the efficiency of this company. Contact was never lacking and pricing was straight forward. Jason and Ted are both super friendly and were very patient with me when I asked a billion questions.
The 3 guys that moved us were hustling. Very nice guys and no dilly dallying. Everything made it safe and sound. I am surprised that they didn’t grumble once at how far the unloading dock was from the apartment on the 4th floor.
I’d definitely recommend this company to anyone. Make sure you tell them you read about the company on yelp to get your discount.

in a word AWESOME.
Gil prepared our “not to exceed” estimate and was freindly and very knowledgable. Truck and Richard H’s 4 man crew showed up on time and started immediately. They are a practiced and motivated team. They were careful with everything and did an amazing job packing the truck. Unloading went quickly and they placed items in our new home without asking. Move time went a little over ( we moved 65 miles ) and the “not to exceed” estimate was the cost we paid. Great moving team, great experience, great price. This is a satisfied customer who will definately use them for our next move. Thank you for an amazing relocation to our new home. Definately recommend this company and team.
super fast, hard-working, careful with our stuff and great communications with me while moving our household goods from 2 storage units over to our new house 8 miles away. had absolutely no glitches while moving everything. they had good mo-jo between one another, as they helped each other as needed…guys didn’t need to wait for the team leader to instruct them on what to do in various situations. worked 8 /12 hours to move our 4-bed, 2600 sq ft house full of stuff. price was extremely reasonable and included a truck and miles. supervisors speak great English and communicated well with the other men on the job. unbelievably careful with our higher valued items (paintings, furniture, antiques). i would highly recommend these guys to absolutely anyone.
I can’t say enough good things about NorthStar. They were so professional, both over the phone and in person…the 3 guys (yes, THREE guys, at the same price most companies quoted me for two) that showed up to move our stuff were super friendly, punctual, and efficient.
They finished the move in record time, and the final charges were less than half of what we (over)paid the last time we relocated – AND we had much less crap that time around!!!
Definitely recommend – great company.
I made a move from Los Angeles to Iowa about one month ago for a new job. My friends gave me multiple options- drive a U-Haul, ship my stuff via USPS, or hire movers. Having carried boxes and furniture up and down multiple flights of stairs in a recent move, I clearly remembered the body aches and pains I suffered in the days that followed. I decided that I was going to hire a moving company this time!! Since I had never hired a moving company, I had no clue where to start. I looked at many of the available companies and most of the quotes were similar. I went with NorthStar for the following reasons: they had good ratings and reviews and their representative, Kat, called me fairly quickly after my online quote inquiry. The communication with Kat was clear. I specified that I would like my belongings to be delivered during a certain time period and although she could not guarantee a delivery date, she said the driver would try his best to get my stuff to Iowa when I requested. I was in contact with dispatch and the driver of my belongings a few days before the delivery, 24 hours before delivery and also the morning of the delivery. My driver was excellent and moved ALL of my belongings up 4 flights of stairs by himself, and on the exact weekend that I had requested even though the weather was cold and snowy.
All of my belongings were present and in the same condition as when I had last seen them. My bed had been wrapped well by the movers so that it would survive the trek. My driver set up my bed for me as well as the frame. Price was very reasonable and I was able to use my credit card for the transaction. I will definitely use NorthStar for any future moves.

I’m very pleased and satisfied with North Star Moving. We got a Not-To-Exceed estimate, and rather than going cheap/lazy, the 4 guys that they sent, went right to work, and worked well. We bought a few boxes, but they ended up giving them to us for free, and they also brought extra blankets, and a wardrobe. All in all, the actual price after the move came to be $200 less than the not-to-exceed price. Not bad…
