One of the few women at the helm of a moving company, Laura McHolm’s NorthStar Moving is the go-to mover for A-List celebrities, The Getty and other movers and shakers. She has single-handedly crushed the dim view consumers once held about the moving industry. McHolm coined the phrase “eco-luxury moving services” and is changing the way people move by offering the red carpet treatment. Honored with more awards for service than any other moving company, she is breaking the long-held notion of moving and storage as burly men doing one job.

NorthStar Moving contributes time, services and financial support to over two dozen community-focused charities and socially conscious organizations including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, E-Cycle Environmental, Global Green USA, Goodwill of Southern California, Habitat for Humanity, Lou Parker Project, Make-A-Wish LA and the Women In Green Forum.

An example of McHolm and her company’s philanthropic focus is the work done with the nonprofit organization Miry’s List, which crowdsources supply requests for vetted refugee families. The supplies help refugees rebuild their lives as they settle in the United States. She and her team at NorthStar Moving provide free services to store essential household items and deliver them to the new homes of the resettling families.

The Los Angeles Times B2B Publishing’s second annual Inspirational Women Forum and Awards event recognized female business leaders who have demonstrated noteworthy success and accomplishments during the last 24 months. NorthStar Moving’s Director of Marketing and Co-Founder Laura McHolm was awarded the LA Times Inspirational Women Entrepreneur & Founder of the Year 2022 in the midsize-large company category.

Ram Katalan, president and co-founder of NorthStar Moving Corp. in Chatsworth, uses business credit cards but is frustrated that interest rates on them rose to as much as 19% during the recession. He said he has been unable to negotiate lower rates or higher credit limits. Katalan uses his cards up to their limits to pay expenses such as hotel bills for his movers, rather than give his employees cash, then he pays the full balance, or close to it, “just to use them again the following month. It’s more of a cash card than a credit card,” Katalan said.

As president of L.A.-based NorthStar Moving, whose clientele has included Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria and Diane Keaton, Ram Katalan says he’s seen a change not only in the number of people asking for confidentiality but also in the type of customers asking for it…Katalan’s partner, Laura McHolm…has been known to send out decoy trucks, start moves at 2 a.m. or employ other stealth tactics to protect clients from paparazzi and snoops.
