On March 19, the 2017 Los Angeles Marathon gathered over 24,000 runners, forming the fourth largest marathon in the United States and the tenth largest worldwide. That means that the race organizers needed to order enough food and beverages for 24,000 exhausted and hungry runners after they crossed the finish line. At races of this size, there’s always a lot of food that gets left behind. That’s where our network can help.

NorthStar Moving rescued approximately 5,000 pounds of food — that’s the equivalent of more than 4,000 meals — from the marathon and delivered them to the Valley Food Bank.

As anyone who’s ever worked in the relocation industry will tell you, summer is the busiest time of year. The increased workload hasn’t stopped our partners from making time to give back to their communities. Since May, our moving partners have delivered over 473,000 pounds of food – that’s over 394,000 meals – to food banks and pantries across the United States and Canada. Here’s a closer look at just a few of the events they’ve been involved in this summer:

NorthStar Moving collected over 7,000 pounds of food during their Let’s Send Hunger Packing drive.

Laura McHolm co-founded NorthStar Moving 20 years ago when she was working as an attorney and felt the desire to do something unexpected. She believes that if people have a happy move, they will have a happy home. Thus, the theme of NorthStar Moving is “Moving Happiness Home.” Her philosophy also applies to her organization, which has been named among the “best places to work” by the Los Angeles Business Journal. McHolm is deeply committed to helping others in many ways.
From May 2 through June 17, NorthStar Moving held their fourth Annual “Let’s Send Hunger Packing” food drive with the help of 30 Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage locations throughout Southern California. This year, they were able to collect 7,132 pounds of food, which equates to about 5,900 meals! NorthStar Moving also volunteered to deliver the donations to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

During the 99th CMSA (California Moving and Storage Association) conference in, CMSA and Move for Hunger presented NorthStar Moving with the 2016 Certificate of Achievement for the second consecutive year. The award is given to moving companies that go above and beyond to fight hunger in their greater community. NorthStar Moving was also recognized by Move for Hunger for collecting enough food to provide over 25,000 life-saving meals to their community, an enormous meal milestone.

You have gone through the packing drills: Boxes? check; Tape? check; Precise type of boxes? check. Ready, set, go! Start packing! Wait a second! Hold it! Before you pack every tea cup and toy car in your home; take a break and step back. There are some items you should first set aside; these items should not be packed. Certain valuables should always be kept close to you during a move, other items can be dangerous and some items simply should be left to the pros to pack to prevent injury and breakage.

Make the packing process easy by calculating how many boxes you need in advance. You will save time and money; avoid running out multiple times to get more boxes or spending money on boxes you don’t need. You don’t need to solve a Rubik’s cube to be able to do the moving boxes math. You’re in luck, we have created a handy graph to give you an estimate of how many boxes you’ll need based on the size of your home.

NorthStar Moving Company was awarded the 2014 Hunger Fighting Hero Award from Move For Hunger for helping to raise and donate 8,109 lbs. of food to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
